School of Economics and Management (SEM) of Xidian University was founded in 1993. Its predecessor is Department of Management Engineering and Information Engineering, founded in 1980 as one of the first management schools (departments) set up in the early period of China’s Reform and Opening-up. In 2012, it integrated related disciplines and majors from the School of Humanities and was renamed as the School of Economics and Management (SEM).
After four decades of development, SEM has developed extensive economics and management disciplines. The school acts as a hub for talent development and scientific research, and has generated a number of award-winning scientific breakthroughs with the support of its various research centers. At present, the school has 4 state-level first-class undergraduate majors, includingInformation Management and Information System, Business Administration, E-commerceandFinance, and 3 provincial-level first-class majors, including Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management and Human Resource Management.
SEM currently has 1 Ph.D. program(Management Science and Engineering), 4master programs(Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Applied Economics, Library and Information), 5 professional master degree programs (MBA, MEM, MPA, Finance, Library and Information), and 10 undergraduate programs (Information Management and Information System, Big Data Management and Application, Business Administration, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Financial Management (Intelligent Finance Direction), Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, E-Commerce, Finance).
SEM has 5 departments: Information management; Business Administration; Management Engineering; E-commerce; and Economics and Finance. The school also has 1 provincial demonstrative center of experimental teaching (School of Economies and Management Laboratory).
SEM prioritizes the educational needs of its students, and places the development and instillation of character and integrity as a fundamental task in its “whole faculty, whole process, and all-round” education initiative.Its main mission is to facilitate the growth of responsible, innovative future leaders who are both business-smart and technology-savvy.
SEM’s faculty members contribute significantly to SEM’s vision of an intellectual community that is inquiry-driven and ethically engaged through their work in teaching, research and social engagement. In recent years, the school has received recognition for its teaching on national and provincial levels. SEMhas 4 provincial quality resource sharing courses (Information Management, Applied Statistics, Managerial Economics, and E-Marketing), 1 national quality course (Forecasting and Decision Making), and 5 provincial quality courses (Information Management, Forecasting and Decision-Making, Applied Statistics, Managerial Economics, and Entrepreneurial Base). Five faculty members were awarded University Distinguished Teaching Award (ZHAO Wenping, WEN Xiaoni, ZHAO Pengwei, LI Hua, and WANG Linxue), and many others received numerous prizes in provincial and university teaching contests. Two teams were selected as the Provincial Teaching Teams, 1 textbook was chosen as the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan National-level Planning Textbook for General Higher Education Undergraduates”, and 1 lab was chosen as the “Provincial Experimental Teaching and Demonstration Center”. In addition, SEM has formed valuable partnerships with more than 10 organizations and companies outside of campus, aiming to enrich student’s educational experience by providing a direct connection with the real world. These partnerships fuel collaborative teaching and research in some of the most relevant areas in business today: innovation, information technology, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and more.
SEM is deeply invested in providing faculty and students with resources to pursue their research interests and achieve academic excellence. The faculty of SEM has published over 350 high quality journal articles, garnered over 60 honors at or above provincial department/bureau level, and received approximately 47 million RMB in funding for scientific research during the last five years.
SEM houses the “Chinese Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Research Center”, a state-level research platform, the “Shaanxi Information Resources Research Center”, a major research hub for philosophy and social sciences, and the Research Base for Shaanxi Informatization and Digital Economy Soft Science. Two research centers were jointly built by Xi’an Municipal Government and Xidian University, “Xi’an Development Research Institute” and “Silk Road Economic Belt Development Research Institute”. It is also the home ofShaanxi University Innovative Think Tank --“Scientific Data Management and Regional Policy Research Center” and “Intelligent Economy and Management Research Center”, as well as8 university-level scientific research platforms and multiple school-level scientific research platforms. SEM is also dedicated to help students in their academic efforts and social engagement, a significant number of policy reports that have been produced jointly by faculty and students, providing solutions that are practical and actionable, many of these reports were implemented by government agencies and businesses.
SEM has 131 full-time faculty members in total, including 29 full professors, 59 associate professors,2 Young Science and Technology Stars of Shaanxi Province, 1 candidate for the New Century Talent Support Program, 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 4 chosen for the Shaanxi Provincial High-level Talent Project, 2 selected for the Shaanxi Provincial University Youth Outstanding Talent Support Program, and 2 selected for the Shaanxi Provincial Youth Innovation Team. There have been more than 30 renowned professionals recruited as adjunct professors, including members of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries, scholars of “Ten Thousand Talents Program” and “Yangtze River Scholar Program”, and recipients of Outstanding Youth Fund.
SEM has been actively carrying out international collaborations with many first-class universities and research institutes, striving to provide opportunities to both educators and students in this increasingly connected world. The School has established partnerships with universities, business schools, and research institutions in more than 10 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Japan, and so on. It has implemented International Expert Programs for undergraduates, in which professors from top-tier business schools were appointed as adjunct professors at SEM, and eminent specialists and academics invited to deliver talks and lectures. A series of International Conferences on New Industrial Engineering were organized in collaboration with several renowned Japanese universities and businesses. A joint education program for undergraduate was approved by Ministry of Education in 2021. Both educators and students have benefited immensely from these efforts.
Over the past 40 years, SEM has cultivated over 10,000 graduates, extending a vast and growing network across sectors and industries. Many outstanding alumni proceeded to become innovative leaders who have made significant contributions to China’s economic and social development, with a substantial number of them having matured into distinguished scholars, political elites, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurial talents, thriving in a tech-driven society.
With a legacy of innovation, perseverance, and impact, SEM has retained its strong general management and economics foundation. More equipped than ever, we are ready to help our students excel where business and technology meet in this ever-changing society, and will continue to produce capable and principled leaders with global perspectives who will transform organizations and change the world.
